Before the seminar you will be asked to work in small groups in order to develop a brief case study – for presentation and feedback during the seminar.

Please prepare with your team a case presentation of max. 5-6 slides, suitable for a ten minutes speech. You decide on how to share the preparation work and speech within your team.

The seminar participants will be informed about the team members via email until October 29, 2009. Please hand in the slides of your presentation until November 16, 2009, in order to allow us to give you a valid feedback during the seminar.

3. The "ECC Case"

A leading European automotive player, "The European Car Company (ECC)" is forced to deeply restructure in order to survive the predatory competition in the current crisis scenario. You are part of a consultant team which has been assigned to support the CEO and the board including the newly appointed CRO (Chief Restructuring Officer, a former consultant colleague) in developing and implementing the restructuring plan.

Your team has been asked to prepare a very sensitive advisory board meeting, where the CEO needs to explain the restructuring plans to representatives of the shareholders and the workers' council. The CEO decided to hold the presentation together with two other board members, the CRO and the HR Director.

The key lever of the restructuring plan is the closure of one production plant in Italy combined with a concentration of the production volumes in the remaining three plants in order to reach the productivity levels of ECC's peers. The plant closure affects 20% of the blue collar workers of the company. Additionally, an overhead cost reduction of 22% has been defined, of which 60% are personnel costs.

You need to communicate clearly the "Why" and "What" of the restructuring plan, addressing the above described advisory board members. You may invent any fact that could be plausible in the described context in order to illustrate your line of reasoning.

Overview dates and deadlines:

  • Applications: October 26, 2009
  • Communication of work groups: October 29, 2009
  • Hand in presentation slides: November 16, 2009
  • Seminar: November 19, 2009

We look forward to meeting you at Bocconi!
